Response to Zach

Zach you hit the nail on the head. I think that you and I have similar ideas about the war. It seems like you are very interested in the Vietnam War from your post. I enjoy discussing war myself. The military history class that I took freshman year was one of my favorite classes of my entire college career. And by the way I’m glad you brought up the key role that the media played in this war because a lot of people from our generation are not familiar with the impact that the media had on the American perception of the war.

To Channing's point, and to Zach's -- the media is tremendously important in shaping the frames through which we see the world, and as such, the media has a huge impact on world events. This is more true now than ever (remember that in the 1960s, the average US citizen watched about 2 hours of television; the average US citizen today is exposed to over 7 hours per day...), and is one of the reasons we should be concerned with media conglomeration under the relaxed restrictions of the FCC. This is an issue that receives little attention, but it's of crucial significance.

Sad, isn't it? how little significant information is conveyed to us in the televisual marathon that is most people's day to day life...we know more about Brittany Spears than about the legislation being passed into policy that will govern our lives for years to come, and more about the sexual history of Paris Hilton than about the history of our country...one wonders how this period of intensifying media frenzy is affecting us as a society. One suspects it ain't good... ;)
